The March on Washington for jobs and freedom event happened on August 28 1963
at Lincoln memorial with 250,000 people. While at this gathering Martin Luther not only gave his now remembered speech but they also successfully pressured the administration of John F. Kennedy to pass a hard earned civil rights bill in Congress.

Birmingham Alabama
In march 1965 in an effort to win the rights for blacks to vote they marched a 54 mile route from Selma to the capital of Montgomery. After raising awareness due to local authorities and white vigilante groups violence against them they finally got their way. The voting civil rights act was passed on August 6, 1965.
The Greensboro Sit-in was started by African american students in the 1960's and eventually desegregated restaurants. The students refused to leave restaurants just because they were African american and would sit until they were served typically ending in arrests and violence
Birmingham Alabama 1963 a group of students met at 16th street baptist church on their way to march to downtown Birmingham. When they were met with high pressure fire hoses, dogs and brutal police force. This was spread all over and raised so much awareness that downtown Birmingham was completely desegregated
